Martyrs Day Nepal 2019

Date:
Tuesday, January 29, 2019

January 29 is Martyr's Day in Nepal, annual commemoration of the people, who were executed while making contribution for the welfare of the country and society.

The term “martyr” was used in Nepal to name persons, who were killed while opposing the Rana Regime from 1846 till 1951.

The regime of Hindu Rajput dynasty featured debauchery, tyranny, economic exploitation and religious persecution.

The promotion of a new constitution ended the regime and the power shifted back to the monarchy of King Tribhuvan.

Lakhan Thapa Magar is considered as the first martyr, who rebelled against Juddha Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana, the Prime Minister during Rana Regime.

The list of martyrs also includes Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Gangalal Shrestha, Dashrath Chand and Shukraraj Shastri (all martyred in 1941).

The fifth revolutionist Ramhari Sharma is often called a living martyr, due to he was not executed as he was a Brahmin.

Shahid Gate, a monument to the martyrs, was erected in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.
