Liberation Day Netherlands 2016

Date:
Thursday, May 5, 2016

Liberation Day is a public holiday in the Kingdom of the Netherlands celebrated annually on May 5.

It marks the liberation of the Netherlands from Nazi occupation during the Second World War.

Germany invaded the Netherlands in May 1940.

The Queen and the government escaped from the country and formed the government in exile in London.

During the occupation, there was a resistance movement characterized by its non-violent methods.

It developed relatively slowly, but was quite efficient.

The occupation of the Netherlands during WWII lasted for almost five years.

The country was liberated primarily by the Canadian Army.

German forces in the Netherlands capitulated on May 5, 1945.

After the liberation of the Netherlands, its anniversary had been celebrated every five years until 1990.

Then it was declared as an annual national holiday.
