Kings Day Netherlands 2018

Date:
Friday, April 27, 2018

The birthday of the reigning monarch is a national holiday in the Kingdom of Netherlands.

Since 2014, it has been celebrated on April 27, marking the birth of King Willem-Alexander.

The holiday is referred to as King's Day (Koningsdag).

The holiday was first observed on August 31, 1885 as Princess's Day (Prinsessedag).

It was the celebration of the fifth birthday of Crown Princess Wilhelmina.

When she succeeded to the throne in 1890, the holiday was renamed to Queen's Day (Koniginnedag).

In 2013, Queen Beatrix abdicated.

Her son Willem-Alexander became the first King since the observance of Queen's Day.

The national holiday then became known as King's Day, and the celebration moved to the King's actual birthday, April 27.

It it falls on a Sunday, it is celebrated on April 26 instead.
